Honesty and integrity. Not always the kind of basic ingredients one
might look for in the overall make-up of a Great Popular Singer which
automatically springs to mind to the listening of other vital commodities
like, for instance, lyric-interpretation, musicianship, superior diction,
impressive breath control, et al...
Yet as you listen through both sides of this uniformly splendid album - no
doubt with increasing pleasure - it is obvious, surely, even to the casual
listener that, along with his all round capabilities, the very essence of Matt
Monro's art is suffused with the twin qualities of honesty and integrity. You
should need little or no reminding that Matt was never less than a truly
honest interpreter of the popular song. One who never needed to engage
in smart-ass affectations, or tawdry gimmicks, in order to project his own
warm and easily communicative musical message. Integrity should have
been his middle name. He never found it necessary to sell his artistic soul;
and he seemed incapable of giving a performance which might in any way
be classified as being even remotely tasteless, unmusical, or second-rate.
Honesty. Integrity. In his music, of course, but also, as this writer recalls
with abiding pleasure, the basic ingredients in the overall make-up of Matt
Monro himself... (Stan Britt - Music Week)
