I cannot believe it is nearly Christmas and with another cruise to fit in before the big day, I will be doing my usual of pulling my hair out trying to get everything done at the last minute. Since we last spoke, my buyer pulled out of Monro Towers. I’ve had my house on the market since April but as I haven’t been here that much I am trying to show the house in the small windows when I’m home. I can’t remember exactly how many people have traipsed through the house but enough to make me never want to sell again.  Because of the circumstances of the buyer and the way he begged for me to accept his offer it never crossed my mind he would pull out but if I don’t get another interested party soon I will lose the bungalow I found for myself in Shropshire. It is just a waiting game now but with the yuletide season looming I might have to wait until next year.

Marco Polo

I have just returned from working Marco Polo. I accepted a booking last year to work Norway in October. Nobody told me the Arctic Circle was in Norway!!! It never crossed my mind but I will certainly take note not to go again at this time of year. I have never been so cold in my life; in fact I thought I’d never get warm again. I have no idea how the Eskimos do it?
Don’t get me wrong it was wonderful seeing the Northern Lights and the North Face but I can tick it off my bucket list now.

Northern Lights

Marco Polo is a cruise ship owned by Global Maritime, under charter to UK-based Cruise & Maritime Voyages, having been previously operated by Transocean Tours, Germany. She was built in 1965 by Mathias-Thesen Werft, East Germany as Aleksandr Pushkin for the Soviet Union's Baltic Shipping Company. After major alterations and additions, the ship sailed as Marco Polo for Orient Lines from 1993 to 2008. She was built as an icebreaker so she handles better than some of the new super ships, which is just as well with some of the seas we were caught in, especially in Alta.

Alta is the northernmost city in the world surpassing 10,000 inhabitants. Its municipality covers 1,485 square miles, in the west of the county, mostly situated along the Altafjord, taking in large tracts of woodlands, as well as parts of the High Plateau of Finnmarksvidda. On its way from the plateau down to the fjord, the river Altaelva has carved out the Sautso canyon, one of the largest canyons in Europe. The large Altafjorden has several notable bays and fjord arms that branch off from it including Langfjorden, Jiepmaluokta, Kåfjorden, and Lille Kufjorden.

This is the main port that if anywhere, this was the place to see the Northern Lights and because of the various tours in offer we weren’t due to leave until midnight. I’m sitting on the deck at about 11.30pm and I suddenly hear a whirring noise that seems to be getting louder and louder and then the side of the ship felt as if it had been knocked by something, then a lull and then the same thing again. Unbeknown to me we were suddenly caught up in 80 mile per hour winds. With the tours safely back on board all enjoying a mulled wine to take the biting cold away, we tried to leave the quay but were literally blown back against the berth, The Captain attempted this maneuver twice and then nothing more happened. I was old by one of the crew that we were waiting for a boat to come and tow us out and that the Bridge was looking at a more sheltered route to the next port. At 12.40am an announcement came over the speaker system announcing that it was far too dangerous to leave (we would probably have got smashed to pieces) and that we wouldn’t be sailing until the winds calmed themselves. I was so relived, words cannot explain the feeling of relief that washed over me and with that news I decided to go straight to bed. As it transpired we left at 6.00am and even though the weather had called hugely it was still a rough ride.

You can never predict the sea conditions but I did worry especially knowing that on 13 March 2013, the M.S. Marco Polo terminated one of her northern lights cruises and went into dry dock for inspection and minor repairs after she had struck an uncharted object under command of the local pilot minutes after sailing from Sortland, Nordland on 9th March.

On 15 March, Cruise & Maritime announced that the Marco Polo had entered Antwerp Ship repair yard and that after a survey; repairs could not be completed in time for the next scheduled cruise on 17 March. A full refund of the cruise package cost and a special £50 pp cash compensation payment was made to all of the passengers affected, She was back in service a few days later.
Talking of bucket lists, I have just accepted a 42-night Amazon, Caribbean and Azores trip in January. I have wanted to go to the Amazon for absolutely eons so I am thrilled and it will give me a great chance to take, I hope, some stunning pictures. Actually I’m a bit mad as I have to fly the day I get back to Madeira to catch P&O to the Caribbean. I’m doing a back-to-back on there so once I leave on 5th January I am not back in England until the end of March but at least I ill be away from the cold.

At last the second of our new releases for 2013 has now seen the light of day. In fact, although due out on 21 October, The Rarities Collection was actually sent out to the pre-orders a few days early. The big news is the inclusion of Bound For Texas. I have been trying to get it released for years but EMI were loath even though it was Public Domain. They didn’t want to tread on anyone’s toes or put a nose out of joint. I was really cross about it as it is one of the only tracks that I hadn’t put on a rarities project so now I’ve had my way, I will leave them in peace… but not for long! As always Richard has done a stellar job on both new collections,  the other being The Alternate Monro , which came out on 16 September, in case you missed the ‘News’ last month . I’ve had several comments of Facebook and the like saying it should have been called The Alternative Monro, but in fact the other is correct. The tracks on the album are alternate takes of songs that dad has already recorded so I think the titling is correct. Don’t forget to go to the Forum and/or Amazon and leave your comments on the new albums, feedback is so important for future projects. HERE

With Steve Woof leaving EMI/Parlophone/Warner, I still don’t have a proper contact name, which is annoying when trying to organize press copies but The Second Disc for theirs so if you’d like to read the review please read on. HERE

Working on the ships I take a batch of tock on with me so with that in mind I just placed an order with Warners. Guess what all the titles I asked for, they don’t seem to have anymore. If any of you have missed any of the new releases in the last five years it might be time to try and get hold of a copy on Amazon, EBay or the like. They seem to be the only ones with any stock and they are going fast. Don’t say you weren’t warned.

I have one more cruise to honour this year and then I am off in December. Max comes home from University on 7 December so that will be fabulous. I do love the Christmas holidays and even though my boy will be 21 on 9th November, he says the best thing about Christmas is his stocking. lol.
As you know we always have a bumper issue for December, as there is no update in January so with that in mind I would love you to send in your Christmas stories, poems, recipes or even a special photograph. Maybe your town has wonderful decorations up or maybe you have a pet bedecked in all its finery or maybe it’s a Christmas picture that holds a dear memory. This is your website and it would be lovely if you could all play a part in it. Send all your entries to

You might like to know that producer Graham Pass spent the day here on Thursday 24 October and he is making a special radio programme for the BBC. The hour special is going out sometime in January/February and will be hosted by Barbara Windsor. The theme of the series is East End Lads. I will let you know more details as I know them.

Graham Pass

Special welcome to all our new members over the last few months and a special thanks to our newest fan, Sheldon Holy. At 17, he takes great pride in being one of dad’s youngest fans

I am still making an appearance every Wednesday on Siren 107.8FM’s ‘Midweek Drive’. The weekly slot allows me to select some of the lesser-known tracks of dad and that is wonderful as it gives me a chance to play a broader range. Sadly because of my cruising schedule for next year I have to cut down my appearances. I will carry on as usual until the end of December but as from January I will only be doing two a month. To be honest I was going to quit altogether but Siren were really upset when I have them the news so I will do my best in 2014.
I am still hoping to have an exhibition of my artwork but it won’t be this year after all. Sadly there are just enough hours in a day for me to get everything ready. It is a big step and everything needs to be right. I don’t like to do things half cocked so it is best to wait until I have slightly more time on my hands. All my shots are taken from a ship at nighttime and exploit the light available. My first project which is on the website is ‘Lights of the Caribbean. My new shots focus on the Middle East and the Fiords.  If you would like to have a look please visit the new site my gorgeous son has just created for me – There are areas to leave feedback so don’t be shy. As with every new site it needs to build up its testimonials so leave your comments even if you hate them.

I am still holding out hope that someone somewhere has a taped show of dad on video. I say it every month but don’t forget that if any of you have an attic full of old tapes that you want rescued or reel-to-reels that you want transferred then Richard would be happy to oblige. It’s amazing what we stuff into our attics and I am still hoping that some of you have a Matt Monro television show or radio that you taped years ago that you have forgotten about. You never know you might just be harboring one of dad’s jingles without knowing it.

There are a quite few new additions to my cruise calendar, suffice to say that I shall be plugging Matt Monro’s music at every opportunity.  That is the wonderful thing about working the ships, it gives me a brand new audience each time and if then, a small percentage go home a fan, then it is worth all the blood, sweat and tears, not to mention the Bay of Biscay!!!! As of today, the dates that are in are:

15 – 25 November – P&O Arcadia

5 January – 16 February - Cruise & Maritime - Marco Polo
16 February -13 March- P&O Oceana
13 – 24 March – P&O Oceana
20 April – 4 May – P&O Oriana  (Strictly Come Dancing Cruise)
5 – 21 May – P&O – Adonia
18-29 November – P&O – Aurora

8 January – 8 April – P&O Adonia (five back to back cruises)

Don’t forget to check out our Spotlight feature this month, I know so many of you enjoy them. This time round we look in at Johnny Cash.

Check out the ‘Rough Guide to’, which is available towards the bottom of the Homepage. A few of you have mentioned that you don’t know how to access certain areas of the site or in fact are unaware of new areas, this guide will explain how easy this website is to get around, once you know how.

There is also another information box “How to Use the Forum’. I know a lot of people have been tempted to join in on some of our conversations but are slightly nervous of doing so. For that reason I have printed step-by-step instructions of how to access it. It really does only take a few minutes.

Don’t forget to recommend the website to all your friends. If any of you have Facebook pages it would be great if you could put the website link on there. If you’d like to do me a tremendous favour then a review of either my book or dad’s new album on or would be fabulous. You don’t even have to have bought the item there and your words could very well influence someone else investing their hard-earned money so it really could make a big difference.

I hope everyone has a great month and until next time here’s hoping that your lives are always filled with music.

Warmest to you and yours
